Thermometer is a instruments which measures temperature i.e degree of heat. The Thermometer records temperature with the help of two functions. 1. Sensing and Scaling.
- Sensing: It is done through tip (in case of contact thermometer) and probe (in case of infrared thermometer)
- Scaling: The measurement of temperature is indicated either by mercury in glass tube with scale or through digital display.
Where are thermometers used?
Thermometer are commonly used everywhere at homes, hospitals, industries and many other places.
In today’s life, digital thermometers have taken over traditional mercury filled glass tube thermometers. There are many reasons behind it.
i. Breaking of mercury glass tube causes safety concerns.
ii. Obtaining reading of temperature
iii. Disinfecting of instrument
The digital thermometers have addressed all such concerns over traditional thermometers such as;
i. No mercury is used resulting no leakage or breakage
ii. Easy to read temperature though LCD display
iii. No need to disinfect as the temperature reading is obtained without physically contacting with the body (Non contact thermometers).
What are features of digital thermometers?
With the passage of time manufacturing companies have added many features with infrared digital thermometer like;
i. Record temperature through Ear, forehead, Armpit and Oral
ii. Memory function which record temperature of more than 30 readings
iii. Beep function to show status of instrument
iv. Mute function to silent the process while recording temperature for babies while sleeping
v. Color display for easy reading
vi. Fever Alarm on high temperature
vii. Temperature indications through colored display for normal and cautious temperature
viii. Record temperature of any object such as room, liquid and any surface
